Champions Crowned at Reno Rodeo

RENO, Nev – June 27, 2010 -- Winning a pair of championship spurs from the Reno Rodeo can do a lot for any rodeo contestant’s resume. Two of the 2010 champions have been lucky enough to win them more than once.

Kory Koontz, from Sudan, Texas, won his third pair here on Saturday night. The veteran team roper won his first pair in 1996 roping with Matt Tyler, and his second in 2002 roping with Daniel Green. This year he did the heeling for Colby Lovell from Madisonville, Texas. They stopped the clock in 16 seconds and were the high money winners at the rodeo with $14,786 each.

Prior to tonight’s rodeo, Koontz was ranked 24th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Hea nearly doubled his 2010 earnings with what he won here and put himself in position to qualify for his 15th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR).  Lovell was ranked 18th. The top 15 in the world make the trip to Las Vegas to compete at the WNFR for world championships next December.

Rodeo contestants that win here will use the momentum and confidence they gained as they head into the lucrative Fourth Of July run. Known as Cowboy Christmas, more money is available in the next week at rodeos across the United States than at any other time of year.

Josh Peek has been chasing all-around dreams since he joined the PRCA  in 2002. He won the all-around and tie-down roping titles here in 2008. This year, he finished seventh in the tie-down roping, earned a check in steer wrestling and got his second all-around championship here.

Gabe LeDoux from Kaplan, La., won the steer wrestling and $13,624. LeDoux won the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver last January and was in pursuit of his second WNFR qualification. In March, at Rodeo Houston, he broke his foot and found himself on the injured reserve list.
In 2009, he missed qualifying for the WNFR by just one spot. The money that he won here will move him into the top five in the world standings.
The Reno Rodeo is part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots. The Final Round will air on In Country Television (broadcast on DISH Network 230 and DIRECTV 344) at 8 p.m. (ET) July 10. Check local listings for re-air dates.

Print depicts the roots of rodeo
Reno Gazette Journal

This year's Reno Rodeo limited-edition print is a step back in time, and that's exactly the way Reno Rodeo President Ray Callahan and artist Cathy
Trachok wanted it.

"My theme this year has been a saddle-broncs-and-sagebrush kind of thing, kind of going back to the roots," said Callahan, a rancher and fourth-
generation Nevadan.

2010 Reno Rodeo Art Print by Cathy Trachock

The roots of rodeo sprang from the ranches of the Old West, when cowboys from the various ranches would enliven roundups and cattle drives with
friendly competitions.

Trachok, a Reno native and lifelong artist, has long had a love for Nevada's mountain and desert landscapes. She has also had a longtime desire to
be the artist for the Reno Rodeo print.

"I used to go to the Nevada Art Supply store, and I'd see the Jim Bama (Reno Rodeo) posters up there, and he was one my favorite artists of all time. And they had some of the other Reno Rodeo posters up there, and I just went, 'Wow, I would love to do the Reno Rodeo poster sometime.'"

So when she and Callahan met last year to discuss potential artwork, they clicked from the start.

"We both sort of had similar ideas," said Trachok, who lives in Napa, Calif., with husband, Russell Barnes, and their three children. "He and I both like
the history of the cowboys. Ray is a rancher. This is all cowboy stuff and real Nevada."

Both are great admirers of the works of the great Western artists like Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell and Callahan wanted the same type of realism depicted in the print.

He showed Trachok a black-and-white photograph of a saddled bronc kicking up its heels, stirring up a cloud of dust, and tugging against a cowboy
trying to gain control.

He asked her if she could use the image as a  starting point. And so she did, with great delight.

"It was a black-white-photograph, so I got to play around with the colors that I wanted to do," she said. "I went up and took pictures at Mount Rose,
but having grown up there, all of those mountains are in my dreams. I went up there with my sister, I went up there and took pictures, and I ended up
using those mountains as a background."

The end result shows Nevada mountains and sagebrush and a scene that has probably played out thousands of times on Nevada's range during the
past 150 years.

The print was unveiled to members of the Reno Rodeo Association at its monthly luncheon and to the general public during the NV of the West event over the weekend at Bartley Ranch Regional Park.

"It was just a lot of fun," said Trachok, whose parents are Dick and Fran Trachok of Reno. "It worked out really well."

This year's print is available at Powers Frameworks, located in the Plumgate Shopping Center at Plumb Lane and Arlington Avenue. The signed and numbered prints are $70.

UNR student Melinda Cowan wins Miss Reno Rodeo pageant PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 12 June 2010

Image UNR student, Melinda Cowan, won the Miss Reno Rodeo pageant compiling the most points of 5 contestants during a 3 day competition. Melinda will become Miss Reno Rodeo 2011 and take over duties as Queen after the last rodeo performance June 26. Melinda was crowned Friday night during the final pageant activity hosted by John Ascuaga's Nugget.

Melinda is
a proud native of Reno Nevada and a graduate of McQueen High School.  She loves horses and the sport of rodeo and began riding as a young girl.  In 1996 she began her involvement with the Reno Rodeo by helping her dad, Gordon Cowan, Reno Rodeo President 2009, with the stalls committee.  She has continued to volunteer since where ever needed and most recently on the Cattle Drive committee.

As a Junior at the University of Nevada, Reno she is following her passion for animals by pursuing a degree in animal science and a career in veterinary pharmaceuticals.

Her favorite past time is showing cutting horses.  "When I am not showing my horse, I enjoy skiing, wakeboarding, and dirt biking.  My skiing accomplishments with the Mt. Rose Falcons has taken me to the Junior Olympics and National Qualifiers multiple times," said Melinda Cowan. "I look forward to the next year representing the greatest rodeo in America, the Reno Rodeo."
