There will be a maximum of seven minutes between teams to allow judges to compute scores. A secretary will deliver the score cards to the Drill Team Chairman. COPIES MAY BE REQUESTED FOR MAILING AFTER THE 2010 RODEO IS OVER. DEFINITIONS FOR JUDGES - SENIOR, JUNIOR AND MIXED DIVISIONS
1. ALIGNMENT shall mean both vertical and horizontal. Vertical and horizontal alignment in the maneuvers of a team, as well as quality, shall be used as a basis in determining the number of points awarded in this category.
2. SPACING shall mean the maintaining of a uniform distance between all horses throughout an entire maneuver. This distance may be varied in succeeding maneuvers in line with the requirements of the particular maneuver being performed.
3. VARIETY points shall be awarded on the basis of drill variety, i.e., single file, pairs, fours, obliques, eights, etc. In other words, the variety of ways in which the drill is performed.
4. COORDINATION AND TIMING shall mean the manner in which the members of the team work together in the performance of their maneuvers.
5. HORSEMANSHIP equitation shall be stressed, adapted for drill purposes, i.e., basic equitation position, leads, hands and the use or misuse of aids shall be especially noted.
6. PERFORMANCE OF HORSE shall mean manners, way of going and suitability as a drill horse.
7. BRISKNESS in executing maneuvers means preciseness, alertness and overall attitude of the team.
8. ATTRACTIVENESS OF PATTERN shall mean the symmetry and definition of maneuvers, also the attractiveness of method used for continuity in which one maneuver leads to another.
9. DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY AND SPECTACLE shall mean spectacle and difficulty of performing a maneuver, not necessarily intricacy. Speed shall be noted because it is more difficult to do a maneuver well when it is done at a faster tempo. It is also more difficult to do some diagrammatically simple maneuvers well. Larger teams may be considered to have a greater degree of difficulty. (Note: Precision shall not be sacrificed for speed. Speed is to be used only as an added point of spectacle.)
10. FLAG AND PENNANT CARRIAGE. The judging shall also include the manner in which the flags are carried, i.e., shafts must be perpendicular, forearm parallel to the ground, elbows should be flexed at a right angle, the emblem should be pointed forward; flags should be kept free and not allowed to wind around the pole. The American Flag(s) shall lead and/or be kept to the right always when in rows, columns or single file. Colors may be posted during maneuvers, but when a team is in formation, the American Flag(s) shall be duly honored by being kept to the right or in the lead. Each team must carry at least one (1) American Flag. 11. PENALTY POINTS: (a) Penalty for allowing the American Flag to be out of position while in formation shall be 25 points. The American Flag(s) shall lead and/or be kept to the right always when in rows, columns or single file. Colors may be posted during maneuvers, but when a team is in formation the American Flag(s) shall be duly honored by being kept to the right. (b) Any change of horses, riders or equipment between the inspection and the drill shall be reported, prior to the performance, to the Drill Team Committee. (c) If a horse and/or rider falls, resulting from a collision during the free drill, 100 points awarded for that division in which the fall occurred shall be deducted. Fall not resulting from a collision will have a 25 point deduction. DRILL TEAM COMPETITION AWARDS SENIOR JUNIOR MIXED 1st $1,000.00 $1,000.00 $1,000.00 2nd $500.00 $500.00 $500.00 3rd $250.00 $250.00 $250.00
SENIOR, JUNIOR AND MIXED DRILL COMPETITION The drill competition will be performed by eight (8) or more horses and riders to the music of their choice. Emphasis will be placed primarily on drill, not on uniform, tack, matching of horses, equitation or leads.
1. GENERAL IMPRESSION: Horses clean and in healthy working condition; no penalty for team of mixed colors; equipment clean, neat, in good repair, safe and properly fitting, uniform; uniforms clean, neat, in good repair and uniform. Saddles, bits and boots excluded as to type and style, but will be judged for cleanliness.
2. EXECUTION OF DRILL: Spacing, alignment, timing and coordination. Was the spacing consistent? Were the lines straight and circles evenly round? Was the timing good with no rider racing or stopping to make her position? Were the connections between maneuvers good? Were there any collisions?
3. PERFORMANCE AND MANNERS OF HORSES: Were the horses well mannered? No bucking or kicking? Horses will not be penalized for having their ears back. Was the performance of the drill brisk with general continuing forward motion? As long as at least one horse continues to move, it will be considered continuing forward motion. Did the horses break gait?
4. ORIGINALITY, VARIETY AND ATTRACTIVENESS OF PATTERNS: Were original and varied patterns used throughout the drill, or was the same pattern repeated several times? Were the patterns presented to the best advantage of the viewing audience?
5. SPECTACLE AND CROWD APPEAL: Was the drill organized in a manner to please an audience? Did the drill flow from one maneuver to another without a lot of positioning maneuvers? Were most of the maneuvers centered in front of the viewing audience? Crowd appeal can include the manner in which the flags, if any, are presented, and also the suitability of drill music to maneuvers.
6. DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: A team that performs a more difficult drill should get more credit than a team that performs relatively easy maneuvers. Ratin degree of difficulty from 1 to 75 with 75 being most difficult. Larger teams may be considered to have a greater degree of difficulty.
NEUTRAL DEDUCTIONS: 1. Broken tack and/or dropped flag, when flags are carried. Tack shall include hats, leg bands, pennants, etc., anything that has fallen to the ground or broken in such manner as to necessitate stopping to fix it. All tack and equipment should be checked before entry into the arena. Deduct 5 points /for each occurrence. 2. Fall of horse and/or rider. If a flag rider falls, only the points for the greater fault will be deducted, i.e., 25 points for the fall of the rider, not to include 25 points for the fall of the flag. A team will be able to stop, regroup, and restart as soon as the horse and rider are in position. In the case of a horse or rider not being able to continue, a substitute horse or rider will be allowed to fill that position. In any case, points already deducted would remain. Deduct 25 points for each occurrence.
3. Over allotted time limit: 6 minutes from the first rider in to the exit of the last rider shall be the allotted time for short program. 12 minutes from the first rider in to the exit of the last rider shall be the allotted time for long program. Deduct 10 points for every minute or fraction thereof over the allotted time. An official timer will enforce this rule.
4. Regrouping: Teams will be assessed a one-time penalty of 50 points if they have to regroup. Regrouping will be done only under extenuating circumstances such as fall of horse or rider, severe tack breakage or medical emergency. Teams must ask the timekeeper for permission to regroup. They may leave the arena with permission.
