On June 16, 2007, City Plaza in Downtown Reno will be transformed into a city-sized street mural, painted in chalk by professional and amateur artists, adults and children, to celebrate both the Reno Rodeo and the Reno fine arts community. Painting begins on Friday, June 15 and judging takes place all day Saturday, June 16.

The theme in 2007 will be the "Wild West Nevada."

Chalk the Walk will consist of four parts, designed to create the maximum opportunity for community involvement.

Showcase Artist Program

Image National "Showcase Artists" who have developed portfolios of chalk-art performance will create temporary works on the year's theme. The artists' work will be accompanied by sandwich-boards announcing their individual sponsors as well as the festival's corporate sponsors.

Local Invited Artist Program

Image In addition, we will offer a category for local artists to explore a new medium or show off their talents. We are considering a jury consisting of members of the Reno arts community to award prizes for various categories.

Families and Schools Program

Image Space will also be devoted to youth organizations, schools, and families from the general public. Invitations will be sent to schools and organizations before the end of the school year, and registration will be required in advance. The jury would award prizes for categories in this program as well.

Try-it-out Program

In order to encourage interactive viewing and involve spectators in the mural creation, we will also provide space where visitors can walk up, grab some chalk, and create a spontaneous work on the pavement.
